We will be getting legally married in Delaware - a state neither of us reside in. We can be married in this state, or any other and have the full faith and credit of our marriage contract honored by the other 49 states. For some loving couples, this is not an option. For gay and lesbian couples, the options are very limitied with the best of those granting couples civil unions. Civil unions are an abbreviated version of marriage which are not recognized in any other state and only contain 300 benefits of the more than 1,000 benefits heterosexual couples receive automatically when married.

For gay and lesbian couples, there are no legal documents to remedy the following:

• Receiving no Social Security survivor benefits, despite paying payroll taxes
• Paying federal income taxes on employer’s contributions toward partner’s health insurance
• Paying all estate taxes when a partner dies (talk about the "death tax"!)
• Paying significant tax penalties when inheriting a 401(k) from a partner
• Denial of family leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act
